You Snake Festival .

FIRST DAY COVER

2013 is the year of the Snake, begins on February 10th shortly after the New moon in Aquarius, the humanitarian of the zodiac.
This 2013 year of the Snake is meant for steady progress and attention to detail.
Focus and discipline will be necessary for you to achieve what you set out to create.
The Snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 Animal Signs.
Traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) has a very significant role in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people.
In some Asian countries such as Vietnam, Japan, Korea, China, 12 animal designations are used in succession to be the specific name for a year according to the signs of the Heavenly Systems and of the Earthly Branches and snake is one of them.
Image of this animal is appeared not only in most cultures, but also carried many different meanings, sometimes conflicting.
Snake of is one of the original religious of the ancient Vietnamese.
It is the enigmatic, intuitive, introspective, refined and collected of the Animals Signs. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means that your family will not starve.
In the Chinese zodiac, the Snake is listed after the Dragon, but its place and its significance as a symbol of worship is far less than that of the Dragon.
It carries the meanings of malevolence, cattiness and mystery, as well as acumen, divination and the ability to distinguish herbs.
In some places, people believe that a snake found in their court can bring delight.
During Spring Festival, people like to paste onto their doors and windows the paper-cut ‘Fu’ character (happiness), combined with a snake twisting around a rabbit onto their doors and windows as a popular pattern indicating wealth.
People born in the Year of the Snake are reputed to be thoughtful and wise and to approach problems rationally and logically, seldom instinctively.
Such people are complex beings, they are clever and men of few words from their birth.
Their business is always going well, but they are stingy very often.
They are sometimes egoistic and conceited.
However they can be very active in their friends’ life.
They are often too active, not believing other people and relying only on themselves.

Featuring festive shapes and on the domestic, iconic gingerbread people, the images on the stamps are so realistic, you can almost smell the ginger and nutmeg—and taste the creamy sweet icing.

Food—especially wonderfully decorated savory delights or sweet treats—are a traditional part of celebration around the world. And whether you’re a fan of the festive season or a total bah-humbugger—it’s almost impossible to resist the temptation of fragrant and warm-from-the-oven Christmas cookies. That’s why we think our 2012 Christmas stamps will be irresistible. (But they’re self-adhesive—so quell the urge to lick them!)

It was her hope to inspire some happy childhood memories with stamps that are a tasty reminder of the pleasures practicing the tradition of baking and lovingly decorating holiday cookies and leaving a late night snack for Santa on Christmas Eve.

According to Stamp Design Manager Alain Leduc, “The simplicity of the well-known cookie images looks fresh and so appealing on the white background. Again, we try to explore symbols for the Christmas stamps that are familiar and have wide appeal—and I think we’ve definitely succeeded with these cookies.”

Royal originsOriginating with the Egyptians and Greeks, gingerbread’s ties to the holidays can be traced back to pre-Christian celebrations of the winter solstice, when small spicy cakes, marked with symbols of the sun were part of the yule feast. Gingerbread arrived in Europe courtesy of the crusaders, who brought then rare ginger back from the Middle East. As the spice became more common and affordable, an early European recipe that called for ground almonds, stale breadcrumbs, rosewater, sugar and ginger became popular. In the 16th century, English bakers replaced the breadcrumbs with flour, and added eggs and sweeteners, resulting in a lighter, tastier treat.
The first gingerbread man is credited to Queen Elizabeth I, who impressed dignitaries by presenting them with cookies in their own likeness. Today, in towns and cities across the country, the best local bakers compete to create award-winning gingerbread homes—more aptly in many cases, cookie mansions—that use gum drops, jelly beans and other candies, coloured icings, nuts and other edible goodies as decorations.

Gingerbread Cookies 250 ml (1 cup) molasses
250 ml (1 cup) golden yellow sugar
15 ml (1 tbsp) ground cinnamon

5 ml (1 tsp) ground nutmeg
5 ml (1 tsp) baking soda

1,000 ml (4 cups) all-purpose flour
1. In a saucepan, dissolve the molasses, sugar and spices over low heat. Let simmer 20 minutes.
2. Remove from heat and add the baking soda. (Be careful: The mix will rise and could overflow.)

3. In a mixing bowl, at low speed, add the molasses-spice mix a little at a time to the butter.
4. Add the eggs one by one and continue mixing.
5. Add the flour all at once with the mixer at low speed.

Sanxingdui Bronze

First Day Entire Cover

Located in the city of Guanghan in northern Chengdu Plain, Sichuan Province, Sanxingdui is the ruins of a prehistoric culture dating back 4,800-2,600 years.
It is considered the origin of the Yangtze River Civilization and an outstanding manifestation of the zenith of Chinese bronze civilization.
Myriad artifacts have been excavated from Sanxingdui, most of which are bronze.
In sharp contrast to the bronze ware discovered in the Central Plains, Sanxingdui bronze features distinctive local characteristics and a strong flavor of wizard culture, clearly exemplified by an astonishing group of standing human statues and masks.
These cultural relics are evidence of the political and religious power of the Shu, reflecting the spiritual values and social characteristics of the ancient kingdom ruled by religious authority.
This discovery is unparalleled in the world’s history of archaeology.
The life-size standing figure unearthed from Sanxingdui's No.2 sacrificial pit, measuring 262 centimeters with its pedestal, is larger than any other contemporaneous bronze figure found so far in the world.
Dressed in a dragon robe, the enigmatic character stands on a high base in an awe-inspiring manner. Some archaeologists have asserted the figure's identity as a combination of god, wizard, and king, or the most authoritative leader, symbolizing the highest religious and political authority.
